Frequently Asked Questions
What is Dysport?
Dysport is an injectable that contains a purified protein that relaxes overactive muscles that create a “Number 11” between the brows. At the Sherman Aesthetic Center, we also use Dysport to soften other areas of the face, such as forehead lines and crows feet. Dysport is not the same as Botox, but is in the same family of chemicals components with a similar mechanism of action. It has been shown to deliver temporary improvements to moderate to severe wrinkles on the face.
How does Dysport work?
Dysport is injected directly in to the muscles that cause facial wrinkles, temporarily relaxing them. It stops the signal from the nerve to the muscles, ultimately resulting in a reduction of muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines. Weakening the strength of these muscles, will decrease the tension that they place on the skin, allowing the wrinkles to flatten out. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth with less wrinkles. The untreated facial muscles continue to contract normally, leaving your normal facial expression unaffected. The average duration of a Dysport treatment is 4 months.
What causes wrinkles?
As we age, wrinkles begin to appear as the underlying collagen and elastin fibers break down and wear out. Additionally, wrinkles appear over time due to repeated movements of facial skin through muscles, most commonly around the eyebrows, mouth and eyes. Dysport can be used to help prevent new wrinkles from appearing by relaxing overactive muscles that cause wrinkles and folds in the skin.
What type of wrinkles does Dysport treat?
Wrinkles are not always age related. Frown lines are “dynamic” – they happen because of the way a person’s face moves. Because frown lines are created by facial movements such as frowning or squinting, they may develop even in younger adults.
What are the side effects?
While side effects from Dysport are minimal, those reported in the safety package insert include nose and throat irritation, headache, injection site pain, injection site skin reaction, upper respiratory tract infection, eyelid swelling, eyelid drooping, sinus inflammation, and nausea. If you do experience any of these side effects, call to speak to a trained professional at the Sherman Aesthetic Center.
How many Dysport treatments are recommended for optimal results?
At Sherman Aesthetic Center you will receive a customized facial analysis to determine how many treatments needed to give you optimal results. However, once the Dysport wears off, it is safe to repeat the Dysport treatment 3-6 months later.
When will I start seeing results?
Full results from a Dysport treatment can be visible as early as one week.
How much recovery time is needed after Dysport injections?
There is no downtime. You can return to your daily activities and apply makeup immediately following Dysport injections.
