Frequently Asked Questions
What is Botox® Cosmetic?
Botox® cosmetic is a natural purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium approved by the FDA for wrinkle reduction. Very low doses are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the overactive muscles that cause worry lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet.
Botox® cosmetic has an excellent safety record and has been referred to as the aspirin of the 21st century. Botox® cosmetic is a very well studied and safe product when used for cosmetic purposes and given by a master injector.
What areas of my face can Botox® cosmetic enhance?
Many women and men have reported good results in “Losing the 11” frown lines between the brows, smoothing horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet, chin irregularities, turning the corners of the mouth upward and enhancing aging necks. In some cases, facial fillers are needed in combination to achieve the best results.
Botox® cosmetic can help many areas on your face. Because every face and wrinkle can be slightly different, it takes a facial analysis at the Sherman Aesthetic Center to see exactly what is right for you.
Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?
Dr. Sherman has proven that you can maintain your facial expression and still lose the unwanted lines if you see the right doctor with the right technique. She has advanced training and experience to get the best, natural looking results.
Is treatment with Botox® cosmetic painful?
Gold medalist and Olympic athlete Nadia Comenche and Dr. Sherman
The discomfort is minimal. After Olympic Athlete Nadia Comenche was injected by Dr. Sherman, she said, “There was really no pain. It is no worse than getting waxed and tweezed, and the results are so worth it.” However, if the patient prefers, a topical anesthetic may be applied before the procedure to minimize discomfort. You can return to your daily activities and apply makeup immediately following the treatment.
How does Botox® cosmetic work?
Botox® cosmetic works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles, sending them into a temporary “time out” so they are unable to contract. This allows the skin to remain smooth and unwrinkled. The effects of Botox® cosmetic are usually confined to the injected region; it does not travel throughout the body, and there is no build-up factor.
Is Botox® cosmetic affordable?
When considering your facial aesthetic options, Botox® cosmetic is quite affordable. Botox® cosmetic is one of the least expensive facial aesthetic procedures in the United States. Like other appearance-related investments, such as hair coloring and cuts, teeth whitening, and chemical peels, the cost must be weighed relative to your expectations. Call today and ask us about our latest Botox® cosmetic special offers.
When will I see results after a Botox® cosmetic treatment and how long does it last?
You can generally expect to see results in several days after the injections, although it may take as long as two weeks. Most people can expect to enjoy the benefits for three to four months, and occasionally, some people will see results lasting up to six months.
Who should not use Botox®?
Patients with neurological disorders such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects. Patients with neuromuscular disorders may be at increased risk of clinically significant systemic effects.
What are the potential side effects?
Most of our patients do not experience any Botox® side-effects. However, as with most injectables, common side effects from Botox® can include bruising and/or swelling headache, respiratory infections, flu syndrome, and nausea. If you do suffer from these side-effects, do not worry, they will disappear within a few days. Bruising can be covered up with make-up. Patients that bruise or bleed easily should avoid aspirin and other blood-thinning products for 10 days prior to injections if approved by their physician.
In less than 2% of cases, the toxin can migrate and cause a temporary weakness of nearby muscles, such as a drooping eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. Because the effects of Botox® cosmetic are completely reversible, side effects are temporary, lasting only a few weeks.
