Advanced Chemical Peels Create a Healthy Glow
Chemical peels are a popular skin rejuvenation procedure that improves the appearance of skin by promoting the growth of new, more resilient, and more evenly colored skin cells. At the Sherman Aesthetic Center, we offer glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and customized combination facial peels for light, medium, or deep exfoliation. We customize our advanced aesthetic treatments to address your skin’s ever-changing needs. Results are cumulative, with increasing improvement over a series of treatments.

Skin Problems a Chemical Peel Can Treat
Chemical peels are an effective treatment for a wide range of skin problems, including:
- Sun-damaged skin
- Rough or scaly skin
- Fine lines and mild to moderate wrinkles
- Acne and acne scars
- Skin discoloration and irregular pigmentation, including darkened freckles and age spots or liver spots
The improvements you’ll notice after a chemical peel include:
- A smoother complexion
- More even skin coloration
- Brighter, more radiant skin
- Softened and less noticeable lines and wrinkles
- Reduced acne and acne scarring
- Smaller facial pores
A chemical peel is not a substitute for a facelift. It will minimize fine facial lines and mild to moderate wrinkles, but won’t eliminate deep facial lines or wrinkles. It can address the early stages of loosening skin, but won’t eliminate excess skin when laxity has advanced. In your consultation with our aesthetic nurses, we will explain the benefits you can expect from different types of facial peels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who are candidates for chemical peels?
They are for anyone who is looking to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, shrink enlarged pores, lighten age spots and other areas of discoloration, improve the texture of sun-damaged skin, and correct and lessen the appearance of certain scars.
What areas can I have treated with a chemical peel?
Besides beautifying facial skin, chemical peels can also be performed to improve the appearance of the neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs. [4]
What happens during a chemical peel?
The aesthetic nurse will clean your skin thoroughly, then apply the chemical solution quickly and evenly to the area being treated. You may experience a mild stinging sensation as a light peel starts to work on your skin, or a burning sensation for five or 10 minutes with a stronger peel. Having completed a light chemical peel, the nurse will wash the chemical from your skin or apply a neutralizing solution. In a stronger peel, the nurse may apply cool compresses or give you a handheld fan to cool your skin.
What should I expect after treatment?
You’ll see the results of a light peel right away in brighter skin tone, though you may also experience some redness and possibly some scaling for a few days. The full improvements will emerge over the following days and weeks, as fine lines and wrinkles become less visible and your skin is smoother and more evenly colored. For optimal results, you may need a series of several light peels.
Medium and deep peels provide more dramatic improvements, but it also takes longer for a noticeable difference to appear. Expect some swelling and skin browning, followed by peeling, which can last up to two weeks. We’ll give you instructions to apply ointments and creams to keep the skin moist through this initial stage of peeling. At first, the new skin will have a reddened look, as if you have a sunburn. It will gradually fade to pink over the next several weeks. You will be able to apply cosmetics after a week or two. Following a medium or deep chemical peel, your new skin will be tighter, smoother, more evenly colored, and brighter than it was before the peel.
What precautions should I take after a chemical peel?
You should avoid any exposure to the sun. Your new skin is very sensitive and susceptible to injury. Wear a hat with a brim and, when possible, plan your trips outside to be early or late in the day, not when the sun is at its most intense. Twenty minutes before you go outside, apply a broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB blocking) sunblock of at least a 30 SPF.
No-Downtime Peels
Salicylic Peel (Beta Hydroxyl Acid)
Works by removing aging skin cells, oil, and debris attached to the skin surface and stimulates new skin cell production. This formula is oil-soluble and lipophilic, so it can penetrate sebum-filled follicles, cleaning out pores without causing after-treatment irritation. This treatment is best suited for oily and acne-prone skin.
Glycolic Peel (Alpha Hydroxyl Acid)
This acid derives from sugarcane and is an all-natural acid peel. Glycolic exfoliates old skin cells while stimulating new cell and collagen formation to soften skin. It also helps with balancing oily, acne-prone skin, along with brightening brown discolorations of the skin.
Minimal-Downtime Peels
These chemical peels are an excellent bridge between more aggressive laser procedures and at-home treatment programs.
