Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare for treatment?

Avoid self tanners, tanning creams, sun tanning and tanning beds 3 weeks prior to your laser treatment. Otherwise your tanned skin will absorb more light, which may lead to adverse effects. Arrive for your treatment with out makeup, lotions, creams or perfumes in the treatment area.

Please notify Sherman Aesthetic Center’s staff if you start any antibiotics or accutane prior to or during your laser sessions, become pregnant or have a history of breaking out with fever blisters.

What happens during the treatment?

Setup requires cleansing. Numbing cream may be applied prior to treatment upon request. The laser photo rejuvenation treatment works by placing the laser hand piece over the targeted area with delivery of pulses of light.

How does the laser photo rejuvenation work?

A beam of laser light is sent onto the target such as broken blood vessels and spots of pigment without damaging the surrounding skin. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment and broken blood vessels to revitalize your skin from the inside out. Directly after each treatment patients will notice redness in the treatment area; don’t be alarmed because this is completely normal. The heat from the laser causes the skin to become red, but this usually fades within a few hours. Your brown spots will become darker for a few days then gradually wash away within ten to fourteen days.

How many treatments are required?

In general we find during photo rejuvenation treatments, the brown spots usually will fade away after 2-3 treatments. The redness can be more persistent and will take 3-6 treatments to control flushing episodes or even flares of rosacea.

Is the treatment painful?

The laser procedure is tolerated well by most patients, as the laser has a dynamic cooling spray to help reduce discomfort. The laser also functions so quickly that only a mild sting is felt followed by warm sensation, similar to a light sunburn.

What are the possible side effects?

  • Dermatitis: redness to the skin.
  • Folliculitis: inflammation of the hair follicle.
  • Swelling: you should expect some mild swelling and redness of the treatment areas for the first 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Discomfort: there is mild sensitivity during the procedure.
  • Pigmentation changes: the pigmented lesions will darken up to 10-14 days.
  • Bruising: bruising is unpredictable and can occur when redness is being treated.

How much does it cost?

Laser photo rejuvenation treatments start at $200 and increases with larger areas. Prices are set by the treatment area size and the amount of time the laser is utilized.
