Frequently Asked Questions
How Does Hair Grow?
Hair follicles develop from a complex series of interactions between different elements of the skin. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time. They actually go through distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. The duration of each phase is dependent upon several factors, including body location. For example, at any one time 90% of the hairs on the scalp are in growth (antigen) phase, compared to only 70% of the hair on your arms. During the regression (catagen) phase, the surrounding skin begins to absorb the bulb. Finally, the hair enters the resting (telogen) phase, at the end of which the hair falls out and the follicle begins the cycle again. The different phases of hair growth explain why it often takes multiple treatments to see adequate hair reduction.
How do I prepare for treatment?
Avoid self tanners, tanning creams, sun tanning, and tanning beds 3 weeks prior to your laser treatment. Tanned skin will absorb more light, which may lead to adverse effects. To maximize your results, arrive for your treatment with out makeup, lotions, creams or perfumes in the treatment area. Do not wax or pluck any hairs from the treatment area 4 weeks prior to your laser treatment or between your treatment sessions.
Please notify ua at the Sherman Aesthetic Center if you start any antibiotics or Accutane prior to or during your laser sessions, become pregnant or have a history of breaking out with fever blisters.
What happens during the treatment?
Preparation requires cleansing and shaving of the area to be treated. Numbing cream may be applied prior to treatment upon request. The laser hair removal process works by placing the laser hand piece over the targeted area with delivery of pulses of light.
How does the laser remove hair?
A beam of laser light is sent onto the target area with enough power to disable or destroy the root without damaging the surrounding skin tissue. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicle. Once absorption takes place, the laser energy heats the follicle which effectively destroys it. Directly after each treatment patients will notice redness in the treatment area; don’t be alarmed because this is completely normal. The heat from the laser causes the skin to become red, but this usually fades within a few hours. The redness is very similar the effect of waxing or tweezing.
Hair grows in staggered cycles, and can only be destroyed during their active growing phase. Therefore, patients must undergo several treatments in order to effectively reduce the amount of unwanted hair on their bodies.
How many treatments are required?
One treatment may reach thousands of hairs, but a single treatment is never enough to completely inhibit hair re-growth.
Therefore, patients must undergo several treatments in order to effectively reduce the amount of unwanted hair on their bodies. Most patients will need anywhere from 3-6 treatments, but some may require up to 8 treatments.
Is the treatment painful?
The laser procedure is tolerated well by most patients, as the laser has a dynamic cooling spray to help reduce discomfort. The Gentle Max also functions so quickly that only a mild sting is felt followed by warm sensation, similar to a light sunburn.
What are the possible side effects?
- Dermatitis: Redness to the skin.
- Swelling: You should expect some mild swelling and redness of the treatment areas for the first 24 hours after the procedure.
- Discomfort: There is mild sensitivity during the procedure. Topical anesthesia can be used for sensitive areas.
- Pigmentation Changes: The laser targets the pigment melanin. If you have a mole or freckle in the treated area these can be lightened by the laser treatment.
Are the results permanent?
The laser causes a delayed re-growth of the treated hair follicles. In some patients this may last 6-12 months or even longer after several treatments. Most will require some maintenance treatments. Some patients achieve long term hair reduction in some areas after several treatments.
How much does it cost?
Laser hair removal treatments usually start at about $75 and increase with larger areas. Prices are set by the treatment area size and the amount of time the laser is utilized.
