Frequently Asked Questions
How do I prepare for my laser treatment?
For best results, avoid all forms of self-tanners, tanning creams, sun tanning and tanning beds for 3 weeks prior to your laser treatment and during your treatments. Otherwise your tanned skin will absorb more light, which may lead to adverse effects. Arrive for your treatment with out makeup, lotions, creams or perfumes in the treatment area.
Please notify Sherman Aesthetic Center’s staff if you start any antibiotics or accutane prior to or during your laser sessions, become pregnant or have a history of breaking out with fever blisters.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Most body areas can be treated with our lasers safely. Common areas include: face, neck, chest, shoulders, arms, hands, back, and legs.
How does the laser work?
Photo rejuvenation treatment uses laser to purify and revitalize your skin from the inside out. This approach combines the laser light along with a cooling cryogen spray to give optimal results with minimal discomfort.
A cryogen spray is applied to the skin in order to protect the outer layers while the laser light passes through and stimulates the deeper tissue cells. Photo rejuvenation stimulates the natural growth of healthy collagen within the skin cells. This procedure is especially effective because collagen growth continues even after the treatment is completed.
This treatment is also able to rid the skin of unwanted pigments such as age spots and freckles by penetrating to the deeper layers of the skin with laser light to break up the unwanted pigmentation. Once the pigment is broken apart it is absorbed into the skin, causing for healthy, radiant, blemish-free skin. Patients will see improvements in the months following the procedure.
What happens during the treatment?
Setup requires cleansing the skin prior to the treatment. You will be given goggles to protect your eyes from the bright light. You will also be given a device to hold during your treatment that will blow cold air to the treatment area. The laser hand piece is gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied.
How many treatments are required?
Depending on the number of conditions you are treating, and the severity of the individual problem, a series of three to six treatments sessions may be recommended. Most patients need several treatments in order to achieve maximum results. Treatments are given every 3-4 weeks apart.
How long does the treatment take?
The treatment time for an area such as a full face can typically last 20 to 40 minutes. Smaller areas, such as the nose can be treated in 10 minutes.
Is the treatment painful?
The laser procedure is tolerated well by most patients, as the laser has a dynamic cooling spray to help reduce discomfort. The laser also functions so quickly that only a mild sting is felt followed by a warm sensation similar to having a light sunburn.
What should I do after the treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, a cold compress may be applied to soothe any slight swelling that may appear and to reduce redness to the skin right after the treatment. Some individuals like to use a spring water cooling spray on the treated area. This spring water spray can be purchased within our office for your convenience. Sun block will be applied to your treated area before leaving the office. It is recommended to use a sun block that blocks UVA and UVB rays. A minimum of spf 30 should be used daily to help maintain results.
What is the recovery process?
You may notice that the skin looks a little “discolored” for a few days following treatment. The brown spots in the treated area will become one to two shades darker in color 10-14 days after treatment. This is called a “peppering” effect. The peppering will slowly exfoliate and become lighter each day. You can also have redness that can look like a sunburn. This redness will improve daily and last up to four days. After that, you will find your skin looks smoother and fresher. In order to keep your youthful appearance, you might choose to have one or two annual maintenance treatments.
What are the side effects?
There is often mild swelling and redness of the treatment areas for the first 24 hours after the procedure. Prior to your treatment, we will advise you on what to expect based on your specific skin type.
How much does it cost?
Laser photo rejuvenation treatments usually start at about $200 and increases from there, depending on the area being treated and the severity of the individual problem.
